Sam, an elderly Springer Spaniel, was recently brought in to us with multiple bite wounds to the neck and shoulders. These wounds had already become infected and the underlying and surrounding muscles were bruised.
The wounds were inflicted when Sam was attacked by two large dogs whilst out on a walk with his owner. The other dogs were off their leads and not under control by their owner. They not only attacked Sam but also tried to bite the owner and his other dog.
We cleaned and flushed the wounds and started Sam on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory treatment immediately. We saw Sam 3 days later and the wounds were already looking a lot better and he is now on his way to a full recovery.
This type of incident emphasizes how important it is that dogs are kept on lead or under the owners control at all times when in public places.
