Today we had a leopard gecko in for surgery. The gecko had developed gut impaction from eating its own wood chip bedding which caused a blockage. There is a high anaesthetic risk with these animals due to their size, and the risk was even greater due to the gecko not eating.
We went ahead with the procedure which was very delicate. It was a surprise to all what was taken out of the gecko's intestine. The quantity of foreign bodies present was immense.
The gecko recovered well from its anaesthetic and was very active this evening. Only time will tell now as this little youngster needs to gain an appetite and make a full recovery. We will keep you informed of his progress.
